A little Advice From Me to You

As a first time mother to be I have been given lots of advice. I have done a lot of reading and research. I like to be educated. I figured I would some of what I have learned through my pregnancy. Hopefully these words of wisdom will help you too!

1.) Do not compare your pregnancy to anyone else's pregnancy - Every pregnancy, labor, delivery, woman, and baby are different. No two are alike. Just because your friend had the worst morning sickness ever does not mean you will too. You may not gain as much weight as your sister did when she was pregnant or you could gain more. You get the idea. Comparing only causes unnecessary worrying.

2.) You don't have to listen to everyone's horror stories - With first time pregnancy comes all kinds of stories from other mothers. They'll tell you everything. The good, the bad, and the ugly. But you don't have to listen to it. You can politely ask them to keep it to themselves. I recommend doing so if you are a person who gets easily freaked out. However, these mothers should know to keep their stories to themselves unless they are asked to share. If you want to hear what they have to say then by all means listen to their stories. Just don't let anything scare you.

3.) Don't be afraid to call your doctor - They are there to answer any questions you have. No question or concern is stupid. Its all about keeping you and your baby healthy and safe. They are used to mothers calling with questions and concerns. I am a firm believer in better safe then sorry. If you have a question or concern, call your doctor and put yourself at ease. No need to worry yourself.

4.) Try not to look for advice online - As tempting as it may be to reach for your computer or phone and google a question, don't do it. I admit I google things from time to time. But I only look up basic things like when my husband would be able to start feeling the baby move, am I squishing my child when I lay on a certain side, or if i should avoid doing or eating something. For questions regarding more serious issues I recommend calling your OB. Looking up medical issues online never ends well. You only end up scaring yourself or convinced you have the black plaque and will be dead in 24 hours. I have fallen victim to this and caused myself to have quite the freak out which always end with a panicked phone call to my husband.

5.) Don't be afraid to educate yourself - Like I said at the beginning of this post I have done a lot of reading about pregnancy. I suggest you do the same. A great resource is the book "What to Expect When Your Expecting." I was hesitant to read this book before I bought it. I was afraid i would scare myself by reading it. But I was wrong. It has a lot of information about pregnancy. From a month by month and week by week break down of what's going on during your pregnancy, nutrition and diet information, tons of questions and answers, a section for fathers, exercise tips and all the information you need about, labor and delivery this book has it all. And its just enough info to inform you but not scare you. I have read a good amount of the book and have enjoyed it. Also there a a few websites I visit to see whats happening in my pregnancy each week. Learning about your baby's weekly development is really cool. Also the more i read the better I felt about giving birth. In fact I am excited for it and not the least bit scared. Also look into breastfeeding and child birth classes. Remember ladies, knowledge is power!

That's all from me for now. Stay tuned for my next blog post.
